Bathroom
Calm routines. No hidden hazards.
Bathrooms combine water, hard surfaces, and privacy — a high-risk combination when a child is left alone even briefly. Scalding, slipping, and accidental locking are the three leading bathroom injuries in SEN households. Each of these products addresses one of those risks directly.
Key Safety Considerations
- 1Set your boiler or immersion heater thermostat to 48 °C or below. This single change eliminates scalding risk almost entirely and costs nothing.
- 2Fit a non-slip mat inside and outside the bath or shower — wet tiles are slippery for everyone and especially dangerous for children with balance or proprioception difficulties.
- 3Replace any internal bathroom door lock with a privacy turn-bolt that can be opened from outside with a coin, or remove the lock entirely if your child is prone to locking themselves in.
Recommended Products
Non-Slip Suction Bath Mat
Hundreds of suction cups grip the bath floor firmly even with splashing and movement, providing a stable standing surface for children with balance difficulties, low muscle tone, or sensory aversion to slippery surfaces.
Bath Water Thermometer
Digital readout confirms water is at a safe 37–38 °C before a child enters. Particularly important for children with reduced pain sensitivity who may not react to dangerously hot water.
Bath Tap and Spout Cover
Soft silicone cover fits over the bath spout and tap, preventing head impact during bathing and stopping a child from turning hot water on independently once in the bath.
Bathroom Door Bolt with External Release
Replaces standard bathroom locks with a bolt that can be opened from outside using a coin or rod — allowing parents to access a child who has locked themselves in, without destroying the door.
